In this hands-on clay workshop, we’ll explore the beauty of natural forms and use them as inspiration for drawing and developing original ideas. We’ll begin by observing a variety of natural objects—such as shells, seed pods, and leaves—and create a series of 2D and 3D drawings, focusing on shape, structure, and form.
As the session progresses, we’ll use these studies to guide the creation of our own organic-inspired ceramic sculptures. We’ll be looking at artists whose work draws from nature, using their approaches as inspiration to encourage your own imaginative and personal response in clay.
At the end of the session, the pieces will be kiln-fired in Sophie’s studio, and thereafter collection can be arranged either from Sophie’s home in Northamptonshire or from the art centre.

Any organic forms you have collected for your own inspiration (if desired), e.g. bark, a branch, pine-cones, leaves, beach-combed objects, interesting stones, any organic forms that inspire you. Sophie will also be bringing some examples that can be used.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Sophie Pennington
My passion for ceramics began during my A Level in Art and Craft at school, thanks to an enthusiastic teacher who encouraged me to explore new techniques and ideas. That love for creative experimentation led me to study Architecture at Birmingham, where I continued to explore 3D design.
I’ve spent over 30 years teaching art in both secondary and further education, which gave me the chance to work across a wide range of media. But clay has always been the medium I return to – it offers endless possibilities for expression and discovery. My work is inspired by the organic forms found in nature, reflecting the beauty I see in God’s creation.
