Photography Skills II - Understanding and Manipulating Light (3-week course)

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

How we see and interpret naturally available light and how we start to understand the principles of controlling additional and artificial light sources to create mood and atmosphere, is fundamental to our role as a photographer.

Lighting determines not only brightness and darkness, shadow and highlights, but also tone, mood, and atmosphere. It is necessary as photographers, to control and manipulate light correctly in order to get the best texture, vibrancy of colour, and luminosity on your subjects.

During this practical course, we will explore the ways in which we can record and control lighting within various situations, found and constructed. By manipulating light through careful selection of camera settings and controlling a variety of different lighting situations, you will create successful, stimulating images.

This 3-week course is designed as a step-up from the earlier workshops: Photography Skills I: Getting Out of Automatic Mode. But, it should still be appropriate for anyone starting their journey of discovery within photography. The course is led by Tracey Sherwood, who conducts photography workshops and teaches photography commercially.

What to bring

Although based at the Arts Centre, we may travel locally to shoot during the sessions - so we recommend you wear appropriate clothing. These are practical workshops, so access to a camera is essential. Please provide your own SD cards and a tripod if you have one. A pocket-sized notebook and pen would also be handy.
