In this short intensive course with professional sculptor Sara Myers, you will sculpt, prep and then fire a half life-size female torso, working directly from life - ending up with a fired ceramic torso to take home at the end. It is a great introduction to sculpting from the figure and also prepping small pieces for firing.
The schedule is split in two parts (and two places) starting with two full, consecutive days at Yardley Arts modelling from life. Followed by a Saturday morning workshop session at Swanspool Ceramics to learn how to prep the torso for firing. When it’s bone dry, Swanspool Ceramics will fire it for you.
Part one
Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 August, 10am-4pm at Yardley Arts
Part one involves spending two full days modelling from life, with Emma as our model. Sara will show you the process and considerations with help in conceiving and sculpting the model. Together we will also look at the modelling process, how to scale up or down, and some basic anatomy. There will be stands, clay, modelling tools and various paraphernalia provided. Each person will be working from a sculpture stand and with the model positioned on a central rotating platform in the lovely airy spacious studio at Yardley Arts.
Part two
Saturday 21 August, 10am-12noon at Swanpool Ceramics
This will be a morning session, designed to take place after the clay has been allowed to harden slightly. We will slice the torso in two and dig out the centre, prepping it evenly and joining it together ready for firing. It will be fired at Swanpool Ceramics after it is fully dry and can be picked up from there later on.
What to bring
Lunch, a drink and wear comfortable shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting clay on. Tea and coffee are available.
Cost
Cost: £150 for the course including materials. Open to all levels. Age 16+. A level Art students might find this course really useful too. As spaces are limited to 8, early booking is recommended.
