Introduction to Oil Painting (3-week course)

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

This 3x half-day course with Tony Hinchliffe is for artists who have some experience of painting in watercolours or acrylics and wish to move to oil. It’s also a fantastic course for self-taught oil painters who want to increase their knowledge of using oils. Once you have these basics and become familiar with how the paint works, add a little imagination and the possibilities for depicting the world in front of you, it can become all-consuming and very exciting.

How it works

Introduction to Oils is based around three progressive workshop days, where you’ll be learning about essential processes with hands on learning. Over three days, you’ll receive straightforward, structured, practical tuition in oils, aimed at getting you painting in oils at home.

If you already work in another medium or are untutored in oils, you’ll find the course will enable you to learn a more structured way of working, so your creativity can flourish.

Week one

Tony will talk about different painting surfaces, how mediums work with oil paint, brushes, working with a simple colour pallet and how to keep your colours clean. He will show how easy colour mixing can be with three primary colours and white.

In this first week, you will paint a simple still life creating a tonal underpainting first to familiarise yourself with oil paint and an opportunity to consider darks and lights in a little more detail. You will then develop the colour saturation into your painting using a few simple colour checking techniques.

Figurative painting – this week you will work from a photograph of a figure, considering a simple composition then create a tonal underpainting using a fast drying medium. Week three

This week you will paint a seascape. Oil paint is a great medium for painting skies, it can be blended very easily and you have lots of drying time, so you can make your blends really soft. We will go through the process of painting clouds using several different techniques including impasto painting with a palette knife.
