Introduction to Portrait Painting in Oils

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

We welcome back the talented Cordell Garfield to run another full day’s portraiture workshop. Cordell teaches a step by step process to create a portrait from a photographic reference. The workshop is designed to help both beginners and more experienced artists, and the process will cover:

  • Using oil paints

  • The typical proportions of the face

  • Measuring and mapping out key features from the photograph

  • The use of line, tone, and value to create the portrait

Cordell will provide supporting handouts as part of the workshop to explain and demystify the technical terms and techniques involved. You will create a portrait that you will be able to take away with you at the end of the workshop.

Cordell’s workshop was enjoyable with a methodical explanation of the painting process and with clear steps involved

Such an enjoyable way to spend a day. I’m never happy with any of the work I produce, but I can genuinely say I’m pleased with how this turned out
