Exploring Colour and Colour Theory with Cordell Garfield

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

Cordell Garfield’s ‘Exploring Colour’ is an enjoyable one day workshop exploring colour theory and the application of colour.

The workshop is designed for all artists at all levels from beginners to more experienced artists. Throughout the day you will be given a series of practical exercises as well as 1:1 tuition to  support your understanding of colour.  You’ll learn how to mix  and match colours, and understand the importance of value, harmony and saturation in colour application. Through these practical studies you will understand colour theory and application, and how it can be utilised to improve your own work.

The workshop will cover:

  • Using the colour wheel

  • The importance of value, harmony and saturation in colour application

  • Understanding how to mix colours accurately

  • Exploring hues and tints and the use of complementary colours

Cordell will provide 1-1 tuition and supporting handouts as part of the workshop to increase your knowledge and understanding of using colour in art. Oil paints will be provided for exercises, but all information provided during the day is relevant to painters in all other painting mediums. By the end of the workshop you will have more confidence with using colour, and be able to approach your creative work with greater control to improve it.

Cordell’s colour theory knowledge is superb, as is evident in his own work. His first workshop was very helpful for beginners and people who have been painting for some time, so I’m very pleased that he has agreed to run the workshop again.

Such an enjoyable way to spend a day. I’m never happy with any of the work I produce, but I can genuinely say I’m pleased with how this turned out
