In this short intensive course with Sara Myers, we will sculpt a 3/4 life size portrait. If you prefer to work life size, you will need to contact Sara in advance. You will leave with a wet clay head – and instructions for firing. The piece once fired will require fixing to a base in your own time. So, there will be time required after the 2-day workshop to finish up.
It will be two short days (10am to 3pm, with a break for lunch) modelling with terracotta, with Neil as our model.
Everything is provided and advice and feedback will be given throughout. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the process of prepping a clay piece for firing will have to stop early for the afternoon on the second day. This will allow you to learn and practice the hollowing out technique used to prep the piece for firing. Then the pieces will be taken away to be finished at home. They will need to be dried out a little before hollowing ready for firing.
The pieces can then be dropped directly with Sarah at Swanspool Ceramics in a specified time frame (Swanspool is just 5 minutes from Yardley Hastings) or left with Sara to drop off.
There will be stands, clay, modelling tools and various paraphernalia needed to sculpt a small piece provided. In addition to this, each person will be working on a sculpture stand with a pre-made armature and with the model positioned on a central rotating platform in the lovely airy spacious studio at Yardley Arts.
What to bring
Lunch and wear comfortable shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting clay on. Tea and coffee are available.

Cost: The course is £150 and it includes two days’ tuition, the clay and firing costs. Don’t hesitate to contact Sara with questions or for more details. Open to all levels. Age 16+. As spaces are limited to just 8 people, early booking is recommended.
