Capturing Memories using Mixed-Media (1-day workshop)

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 United Kingdom (map)

This workshop run by artist and tutor, Cathy Burnett is aimed at anyone who wants to capture their precious memories in a piece of artwork and enjoy a creative approach to picture making in a relaxed and supportive environment.

After a short introduction, the morning will be broken into sections allowing structured experimentation. We will begin by developing colours schemes appropriate to ‘the memory’. This will involve a mixed media approach and experimentation.

We will make black and white photocopies of your original sources, which will enable you to utilise them in your composition. You will have the opportunity to use wet and dry media, oil pastel transfer, colour mixing, wax resist and collage.

These activities will furnish you with a ‘palette’ of coloured papers, textured surfaces, imagery and pattern in well considered colour ways, ready for development into a resolved outcome.

Guidance on layout and composition will follow, looking at layering, balance, the introduction of hand drawn illustration and effective collage. Whilst hints and tips will be provided in a general way with more personal instruction as required.

Final outcomes will be approximately 20cm x 20cm, built on 200gsm smooth cartridge paper. Exemplar material will be provided, illustrating various approaches to the activity.

What to bring

You will need to bring along items to act as the starting point for your personal work, eg, old photographs, fabric sample, collections of tickets, old wallpaper fragment, etcetera, which will form part of the memory to be developed into a piece of art.

All art materials will be provided however you are welcome to bring along your own favourite media and materials if you wish. A small sketch book may be helpful for exploring compositional ideas and you may wish to bring an apron or old shirt.

Please bring a packed lunch; we will take a short break at about 12.30 pm for lunch/refreshments. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available for £1.

Cost

£65 per person. Suitable for ages 16+. Spaces limited to 10. Experience is not necessary as support and guidance will be on hand. If you have creative experience, you will have the opportunity to apply and develop your media handling, colour selection and compositional skills.
