Colours used with careful consideration can create mood and atmosphere an area of painting that is often overlooked. This is a one-day workshop with Tony Hinchliffe on how to mix and understand colour with more confidence. How to mix mid tones, lights and darks using the three primary colours, brown and white.
We will start by creating a colour wheel as a guide and reference to the questions you need to ask yourself when mixing a colour. Warm colours and cool colours can seem very close together at times and this course will help you to identify and differentiate between them.
Tony will share with you his tips on how to accurately mix a colour and match it to a photograph or a direct observation scenario - this will give you more confidence in all your painting applications.
He will cover how to string out colours and make colour swatches so you can easily see how colours harmonise or complement each other.
Throughout the day Tony will present you with different colours and lay down the challenge for you to replicate them - a little like mental arithmetic but with colour.

You will discuss the benefits of doing a tonal underpainting and how working on a tinted background can help key all your colours together.
Near the end of the session we will put it to the test with a painting exercise. Tony will demonstrate how much artistic licence you really have when It comes to applying colour, while still keeping a sense of realism and interest in your artwork.
He will show you advantages of mixing and applying colour with a palette knife, using impasto techniques for lighter colours.

Sketch book, pencil, ruler
Pallet - not stay wet just standard, a large piece of ceramic tile or plastic tray would work
Mist sprayer - just in case your paint starts to dry too quick, give it a quick spray with water
Old clothes or apron – acrylic is difficult to remove from clothes
