Introduction to Sculpture for Adults - 6 Week Course

Led by Clare Abbatt.

 

Thursdays from 22 February (22 February, 1/8/15/22 and 29 March)
Time: 10am – 1pm

Max 8 students.
Tools provided.
Cost: £190 to include materials and bisque and raku firing.

1. 22nd February / Clay modelling
Coil building, slab building and modelling on an armature (frame).
Planning the construction of the sculpture according to the form. This is an essential skill.

2. 1st March / Carving
Soap-carving to learn about reducing a form to create sculpture.
Continue with clay work incorporating different techniques.

By the end of week 2 each student will need to have completed a hollow piece in stoneware clay to be dried and bisque fired by Clare ready for raku firing at the end of the course.

3. 8th March / Mould making and casting
Press moulds and casting small forms in plaster and metal.

A discussion of waste moulds, two part moulds and casting will be included.
In this workshop students will also cast a form from an existing mould to be raku fired on the final day.

4. 15th March / Scale and materials
We will look at scale in sculpture and consider the use of different materials. The tasks today will be to sculpt a small handheld piece in clay inspired by netsuke, miniature Japanese sculptures, and in two teams, to build two large sculptural structures from cardboard.

5. 22nd March / Relief sculpture and assemblage
This workshop will allow abstract pieces to be constructed as well as figurative work.
We will use clay and a variety of materials and objects. We will look at Surrealism, Cubism and contemporary art.

6. 29th March / Raku firing
We will look at ceramic sculpture and glazes. Students will glaze their bisque fired pieces and fire them in the raku kiln in the garden.

 

If the weather is wet we will have to postpone this session to a later date.
At the end of the course, students will be able to take their work home.
